The alluring Limestone caves in Andaman are a feast for the eyes to a nature lover. Limestone is a sedimentary rock formed at the bottom of the sea. It is formed over millions of years by the accumulation of various deposits of marine life, shells, corals and skeletons which undergo a natural compression to form unique shapes within the cave. On the way, you can admire scenic coastline covered with dense mangrove forests and you even pass through mangrove-covered canals making the ride more thrilling. The Limestone caves in Baratang are highly recommended to be on your Andaman itinerary.

How to reach and what to expect when you visit the Limestone caves in Andaman

Prepare to get up early (really early!) Vacations are time for a good nap and having a lazy Sunday every day. But the story will be completely different if you choose to visit the Limestone caves. There are mainly two reasons for this. If you have your pit stop at Port Blair, the caves are around 100+ kms away from port blair.

You’ll first have to get to Baratang by road which involves traveling through the Jarawa reserve tribal belt. This is done only in a convoy and you’ll have to be on perfect time to catch the convoy fleet. In most cases, it involves waking up at 2AM to start your journey by 3AM and get to the convoy check post by 4:30AM.

You’ll be travelling through Andaman’s lush green rainforests with trees forming a wonderful canopy at times. You’ll be astonished at the shades of greens. The cars aren’t permitted to stop along this drive as it passes through the restricted Jarawa reserve tribal belt.

Once you reach Baratang Island, you must board a fibre motorboat. Sometimes there is a large queue and you will have to wait for your turn.

This boat can accommodate up to 6-8 people subject to its size.

The limestone caves are a 12km adventurous boat ride and 2km trek away from the Baratang Jetty. The boatman is usually your tour guide too and you shall return on the same boat that you went on.
